Colorado's Year-Round Backdrop

Shelley Fredricey

Updated: Feb 2

I have to say, we sure are lucky to live in a state that affords views year-round. No matter if the buds of spring have not yet burst or the colorful leaves of fall have long since browned and fallen, along the front range we have that beautiful mountain backdrop no matter the season. For portrait photography, that means that we have a natural backdrop almost 360 days a year!

This past fall the weather presented quite a challenge with all of the snowstorms and wind in October. After continuing to reschedule sessions and push them farther out, I also had to reconsider my location options, since we were looking at parks and lake areas with colorful trees.

Fortunately, one of my clients suggested a place for their Colorado family portraits that was new to me: an open, grassy field near Lafayette with the mountains in the background. The sessions turned out beautifully, and it opened my eyes to a new location that could be used year-round, but especially in the winter months when there is a lack of color in traditional locations.

Have a look at Paul and Kerry's family session.

Other Colorado portrait ideas for stick season and winter are the urban options that we have in Denver, Boulder, Louisville, Lafayette, Golden, Arvada and other towns. There are always nice textures and architectural backdrops in an urban setting.
