Most people will get a senior portrait taken because it is something that is needed for the high school yearbook. And often because mom and dad want an updated photo for themselves and family. But have you thought about senior pictures as a full-on experience?
High school graduation is a true milestone–these young adults have developed into individuals with their own personalities and interests and are getting ready to show these to the world. This time in a young adult’s life presents a unique opportunity to capture and record this special milestone through images.
I love to provide full-out experiences for my high school seniors because this might be the one time in their lives that they get to be the star of the show. A senior portrait session is like getting to be a supermodel for an afternoon. It’s an experience that is celebrating an individual with their unique interests and personality.
The next time that one might have a portrait experience is likely to be a wedding, but this is so different. This is about the union of two people and the joining of families. This is also special, but it is very different from images that are focused on an individual.
Part of the experience is the planning leading up to the portrait session. Brainstorming ideas for the session is fun, and location and outfit planning definitely builds excitement for the big day.
Since I personalize/customize every session, we might be going to multiple locations, like a downtown area and then an open space. Or maybe we begin at the high school track or pool to get sports images and then head out into nature to get outdoor portraits. Or we could be doing a studio session with a musical instrument, or heading out at sunset for an epic parachute dress session.
I can see the confidence building as we move through our session, trying different poses, changing outfits, and having fun.
And the confidence continues to grow when we sit down with their family to watch the big gallery reveal at a senior’s portrait slideshow presentation. And when they see their album for the first time where they look like a supermodel in a magazine - wow! What an amazing keepsake to have and look back on, and to be able to show to family now and in the future.
This milestone is why I love being a senior portrait photographer. Getting to work with young adults at such an exciting time and helping to build their confidence as they get ready to begin the next chapter in their lives is so rewarding. And being a boutique senior photographer allows me to create memorable experiences for people that go beyond snapping a photo for the high school yearbook and to create keepsake photographic art that will be forever cherished.
