The time has finally come to take your senior pictures! You are probably excited and nervous. This is normal! I am here to offer some tips and ideas to put your mind at ease.
Plan more than one outfit
The first piece of advice I have is that you should plan at least two outfits, and preferably add on a jacket (more on that later) or a button up shirt (guys). You may think you have the perfect dress or outfit, but sometimes you love something on the rack or even on your body, but for some reason, you don’t like the way it looks in photographs or how it affects your skin tone. I had one client who felt this way about the white dress she wore. She thought that it washed her out, but luckily, she also took photos in a green dress and loved those photos.
If you don’t already have two outfits in mind, try choosing a dress in addition to something more casual, like jeans and a sweater or a fun top. Dresses (empire, maxi or A-line) are great because they flatter all body types. Prints can be a lot of fun for dresses and tops. Guys can do something casual like a plain or heather t-shirt and then a button up shirt for their second outfit. It can be nice to do a light colored shirt for one and a darker color for the other. And consider doing one plain shirt and one printed shirt.
Jean Jacket
A timeless look is to add a denim jacket to an outfit. You can layer it over a dress, and then you easily increase your outfits/looks from two to three.
Accessories
Don’t forget about accessories! Hats can be really fun for girls, especially sun hats. Boots are always fun as well. The great thing about digital photography is that we can try lots of different things, and you only have to keep the images that you like.
As far as jewelry goes, try to choose one statement piece like earrings or a necklace, and then coordinate your other pieces. So if you are wearing statement earrings, go for no necklace or a daintier necklace, or if you have a large loud necklace, try smaller or stud earrings.
If there is a sport or hobby you are into, you could bring a prop to use in a few photos (musical instrument, ballet shoes, etc.)
Other Tips:
Don’t go too trendy; gear towards more classic looks (you will have these photos for a long time!)
Pay attention to bra straps! Plan ahead and find a bra that goes with your top/dress. It can look tacky to have straps showing.
Bring shoes you can walk in, and you can always change before we start taking pictures. We may be walking on uneven ground to get to our beautiful outdoor location.
Bring a small touch up kit with your lipstick or gloss and a brush.
Bring your mom or a friend if that makes you feel more comfortable and at ease. But if it makes you feel more nervous, just bring yourself!
Practice your smile and serious face in a mirror. You will get an idea of what expressions you like. Also try a fake laugh. I will probably make you try it and you might actually laugh! This is how we get candid photos!
Pay attention to nails and watches. Do your nails look presentable? Are they a color you want to freeze in time for decades? Do you want your watch in your photos?
Where to Shop
There are so many options for women’s clothing, and you probably have some favorite places. A couple of local places that I have noticed recently are 1) Murdochs - they have a great dress section in the summer. 2) Rebelry Boutique - great dresses and tops
Inexpensive stores in the mall with options are H&M, Old Navy and Forever 21.
We are so lucky to also have online options. One of my seniors turned me on to Halara.com.
With a little planning and thinking ahead, you can nail your outfits for your senior photos. Happy shopping!
